#WritersRecap: Tampa Pro 2018 was drippin' in finnesse

For some people, they feel at peace in a church. For other people, they feel at peace in a hot tub. Me? I am one of those weird people that feels most at peace at a skatepark.

My love of skateboarding began in 2005. Most of you all know that story or remnants of it so I won't share it again for fear of repeating myself. #LongStoryShort: Skateboarding is music to my ears, and it's the muse to my artistry as a writer. For as long as I've been a writer, skateboarding has always appealed to that part of me, the creative part that society labels as outlandish, peculiar, an outsider of sorts.

Yet when I am at a skatepark I meet other people just like me: skateboarders.

They skate to their own rhythm and aren't afraid to break the rules. They even defy gravity in the meantime. Yet, this was no ordinary weekend at the skatepark. This is Tampa Pro weekend. The biggest pro contest for the east coast that is what the X-Games used to be for Los Angeles (This year, they debut in Minneapolis so that should be rad. I am just equally stoked for skateboarding to finally be in the Olympics in 2020.)

So my friend and I got our Weekend Passes and headed out to one of my favorite local skateparks: the Skatepark of Tampa or SPOT.

We arrived drippin' in finesse and ready to obsess over all the ollies, heel flips, and board slides.

And yes, I have purple hair!
Right away, my friend and I got our wristbands and we were so totally stoked, man.

Then, my friend realized she really had to pee.

So naturally because I haven't been to Tampa Pro or SPOT since 2013 I only remembered the outside bathrooms so I pointed them out to my friend and she shut the door just as a skateboarder was heading to go in himself.

I was looking down at my phone out of habit when I hear a male voice ask me, "Hey are you in line?" I look up to realize the person who asked me is none other than pro skateboarder and past Tampa Pro winner, Luan Olivera.

Figuring the line for the bathroom wasn't the right lighting for a selfie, I just said, "No," and left him alone.

In my head, I was totally tripping the freak out!

Then, we went to watch the open practice. I spotted many of my faves and some new dudes I never saw before. Yet, this one guy looked like a young Kane Sheckler to me and I felt this sense that he was going to win by the end of the weekend.

My friend and I watched the dudes practice for 45 minutes before we headed out. We decided to walk through the shop so my friend could look around. As we were looking around, I happened to look toward the door, as a rather tall older dude was walking in wearing a hoodie and dark jeans.

I gasped as we made eye contact.

The dude who just walked in to SPOT was none other than Chris Cole.

Someone I never saw in person yet in the near 13 years I've been an avid supporter of the sport and those who participate in it.

Then, he walked nonchalantly carrying his board in hand.

And this was only day one out of three.

Day 2 was equally as rad except my friend and I didn't stay for the entire qualifiers so I didn't get to get a selfie with Leticia Bufoni. Yet, it was no surprise that Manny Santiago got Top 2 alongside Yuto because he was on fire for both of his runs. We came back later for the night life portion of the day and it was totally cool to see how the skatepark looked at night.

Day 2 included me making a joke that I found Ryan Sheckler there but really it was just his signed deck in the Boards For Bros display.

The finals started on Sunday right on time. Yet, we arrived late. Thankfully, after a little while of watching it on the big screen in the back area near the pool, we found seating right outside the warehouse in the area that used to be the picnic table area (at old school Tampa Pros 06-13 prior to it becoming part of the Street League Skateboarding program).

Here we are sipping our After Sesh Lager and watching the finals. Yet, I got a little bummed that I barely saw any of the skaters just hanging out on the courtyard. I mean, did you even really go to Tampa Pro if you didn't get a pic with a pro skater?

Next thing I knew Jagger Eaton put down a sick run straight out of the gate, and by the time all other 11 dudes went, he was the champ on top. He was officially declared the winner.

So naturally, I happened to see him and asked him for a picture and told him "Congratulations!"
Dang, the young Kane Sheckler walked out of Tampa, FL $75,000 richer. And what's even cooler is like a Sheckler, he's not even 18 and already smashing records. (He's just a Sheckler look-a-like but still).

After I took a picture with the champ Jagger, I turned around to see one of the dopest dudes in skateboarding coming down off the ramp. And I wanted to cop one of his custom made Grizzly shirts but by the time I tried to get one they were already gone.

Yes, I am referring to Mr. life of the party, Torey Pudwill.

No selfie with TPuds? Tampa Pro didn't happen.

Of course, my family gave me a small list of who they hoped I would get a photo of or with:

I didn't get to meet my sister's crush Curren Capples but I did get a photo with a young Japanese Chris Cole, my mom's favorite: Yuto Hurogome.

I did miss seeing the OGs like P-Rod, Sheckler, and Chaz Ortiz but Tampa Pro weekend was officially a success. And I left happier than my dogs whenever I ask them if they want to go on a walk.

Until next year, Tampa Pro. It was a real freaking pleasure! And who knows maybe next year, my book Kickflip My Heart will be out and I can promote it while I'm there. A writer can only dream, right? :D

As I was sitting down to write this post, I happened to fall down one of those rabbit holes on Instagram where it keeps taking you to look at content similar to other photos you've liked and I happened to see a familiar face of a snapshot featuring Nyjah Houston. Wouldn't be the first time I was caught in the background as a true fangirl of skateboarding. Naturally, I am smiling from ear to ear and look at peace.

As you can see, skateboarding will always Kickflip My Heart every single time.

The Joy in Having an Adventurous Spirit

I've recently discovered a dilemma. You see, I really wanted to go to Tampa Pro this year. Why? Well, Tampa Pro is the best skateboard contest I've ever been to. And I say that completely biased but it really is. The sights, the sounds, the smells. It's a skateboard contest that is a thriving atmosphere for inspiring a literary artist like myself. The actual sound of a skateboard's wheels coasting on concrete or wood is music to my ears. Yet, the dilemma I'm facing is not my passion for attending this year's Tampa Pro, but the fact that I have no adventurous friend who wants to attend with me.

I don't really know why I thought this year would be any different. Over the past two years, I've cut a lot of people out of my life. Yet, this year, I posted a status on social media asking if anyone wanted to go and shockingly, no one wanted to join me. They either already had plans or they just don't care for skateboarding.

Now I'm not posting this blog in hopes that someone will volunteer to join me. I am even willing to go alone just because I love being at the Skatepark of Tampa during Tampa Pro weekend. It's so colorful, vibrant, exotic. It feels like my home away from home for me.

I even talked to God about it and when I prayed, "I don't know what to do, Lord." He spoke to me through my daily Bible reading:
And with that simple statement, I've let it go. There's always next year, right? :) Plus, I can still watch it in my pjs from home on StreetLeague.com so it's not the end of the world.

Yet, the reason I share this with all of you today is not because I want you to feel bad for me, or feel obliged to take me to the live event, I share this information because I don't entirely need to go to Tampa Pro to feel that as a writer, I've had my little adventure to experience life in order to write about life more naturally. The point I'm about to make is that life with Jesus is always an adventure.

For example, yesterday was National Pancake Day:

My family and I headed out a little after 11 o'clock to get our free short stack of pancakes from IHOP. Because I had trouble sleeping the night before, my dad offered to buy us a pot of coffee for the table. I thought that was really nice of him considering a pot of coffee at IHOP is now almost $3 a person.
We walked into IHOP to find a slew of people, both waiting outside the restaurant and within the waiting area. Wearing my pink shorts and an old t-shirt claiming "I brought sexy back," I was struggling to even be awake despite that it was near the middle of the day. Once seated, we enjoyed our pancakes and coffee, and donated to the Children's Miracle Network, and left. I thought we were going to head home after that.  I was in for a big surprise.

Every time I go out with my family, it's "the stops" that stop me from going out with them again. haha. Yesterday was no exception. After IHOP, Dad asked that we make a quick stop within the garden section of K-Mart so we hopped in the car, and headed next door to K-Mart to go look at the flowers. Then, one of Jayde's friends wanted to use her Iphone charger and his phone was about to die while he was busy working, so then there was that stop. Mom then announced we needed to drop some books off at the library and she had to pick up pool chemicals at the pool store. Then, I ended up with another set of books. How does anyone walk into the library or even a bookstore, and not a get a book? :

Before we stopped home and got my sister's charger, we picked up the pool chemicals. While her friend charged his phone, we stopped at the mall so she could get her eyebrows threaded. Then, went back to Steak N' Shake and picked up her charger.

After all this, we headed home because it was time for lunch.

I asked God for an adventure and he provided one, free of charge. God is so merciful.

This got me thinking, what other adventures would I love to have:

1. I'd love to visit NYC, San Clemente, CA, and Los Angeles for a week at a time.

2. I'd love to just drive and end up sightseeing.

3. I heard there's a cruise that just sails around the world. That sounds interesting.

4. I want to travel and see every site I studied while minoring in IHT (International Hospitality and Tourism).

Until next time, remember: To live will be an awfully big adventure. -Peter Pan (J.M. Barrie)

Tampa Pro 2011: The Gnarliest Skate Contest Ever

Florida born and raised but I've got Jersey in my veins...Seriously. If you weren't at Tampa Pro this year, don't worry. Chellyz got yo back. :)

Everyone was here this year. There were 90 skaters attempting to qualify and make the Top 30 to make it to the Semi-Finals where the Top 10 from there go against the Top 2 qualifiers of the weekend. Those two Top dawgs were none other than Torey Pudwill and Zered Bassett.
In case you never heard of the Tampa Pro. It's a professional contest that has been going on since 1995 and it takes place 45-50 minutes away from my house in Port Richey, FL at this place called the Skatepark of Tampa:

It was my best friend Sarah's first Tampa Pro:

She had a killer time! I think she will accompany me to future Pro's. :)

Here's Jereme Rogers and Nyjah Houston♥

Here's Danny Cerezini and Torey Pudwill♥

We also met Chaz Ortiz. The caption for this pic, "Pimpin' aint easy unless you're Chaz Ortiz." Such a cute kid. My sisters officially have a crush. Trust me, it's hard not to like skaters they are the sickest athletes ever, not to mention realer than G's and hot as sin! ;-)

Congrats to Dennis Busenitz for winning this year's Tampa Pro. Also congrats to Nyjah Houston and Torey Pudwill for taking second and third place. :D

The winner's list looks like this:
1. Dennis Busenitz
2.Nyjah Houston
3. Torey Pudwill
4.Shane O'Neil
5.Luan Oliveira
6.P-Rod
7.Chaz Ortiz
8.Zered Bassett
9.Eric Koston
10.Ryan Decenzo
11. Jereme Rogers
12.Chris Troy
All in all it was a fun weekend. You should go next year! Trust me, it's worth the 15 dollars plus hotel stay* and travel expenses.* The sickest shit goes down here every year! :)

Before leaving you with a few final words, Ryan Sheckler would have made the winning list if he didn't get word of a family emergency and had to fly home. Prayers and kind thoughts are being sent his way!

This week is Spring Break for me and my gorgeous sisters. I'm looking forward to spending the week bonding with them. So far, we had fun last night playing with our webcam. Here's a little sneak peak:
My friends all call me the Sexy Librarian because I work at the library. What do you think?

Until next time, follow Lauryn Hill's advice: Don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem- Doo Wop(That Thing). This is the rock that sits on my closet in my dorm that says that exact thing. It reminds me to value myself every day♥ Ladies and gents, be more than this:
Don't give it away. As I always say: "Better the wedding band around my finger than a memory of a one night stand left to linger."♥
