#WriterWednesday: Who holds your confidence?

I don't know how but I started off 2016 with so much faith, passion, and confidence, and along the way, it just diminished until it was equivalent to a cell phone battery blinking and desperate for a recharge.

I think the first thing that diminished my confidence was when I attempted to lose weight through the lifestyle program affiliated with Shakeology, 21 Day Fix.

I really was stoked to spend about $75.00 on myself, or so my coach promised me. Yet, then my house air conditioner broke and my coach stopped sending me motivational texts and I said, why should I even bother with this?

The unseen truth here was that instead of blaming my loss of weight on my coach's lack of encouragement, and my house's air conditioner crapping out, and just finished it like the boss chick that I claim to be. Yet, there was a power source issue here that instead of addressing, I let slip and just gave into my flesh when it came to over-indulging in sweets, alcohol, and fatty foods.

Following me quitting me Shakeology followed to me subconsciously overthinking the way I was being treated at work. I may have been really been targeted as far as abuse was concerned but either way, I overthought the whole situation and as a result, I called out one too many times and was immediately terminated.

Right after I was fired, I got a query response from an agent who ripped me apart for a previous blog post I shared on here where I responded to how an agent criticized my memoir in order to show other artists out there that you shouldn't change your art to bend to the trends of the marketplace but you should write, play music, draw or paint whatever your heart is screaming at you to share with the world. Art based on authentic passion always speaks volumes to the struggles of the world around us than the fickle trends of the marketplace when you query.

This query response would cause me to stop submitting to agencies for the time being.

Plus, it made me stop writing creatively. I lost hope that my words even mattered at all. It turns out that the problem is my query letter itself and not my memoir. The query letter fails to sell the heart and soul struggle of my fight and how my story will breathe truth and change into people's minds if published.

A month after being terminated, I got hired with an undisclosed parcel company for seasonal employment. I applied to be a package handler but got hired as a golf cart delivery person in a residential neighborhood catered to the use of golf carts. They didn't call me to start until the end of the month and I grew impatient and easily frustrated. I went the first day and if I had thought they were unorganized before, after one day of work I certainly DID NOT want to work for them. Some issues that led me to feel this way:

  • My trainer was an hour late to meet me when my supervisor told me to be there at 1:30.
  • I was fine when doing the job on my own but the trainer made me feel inadequate and judged, not to mention unwanted.
  • We were responsible for too many packages for only two people assigned to the pod so we ended up working until 7:30 that night with a broken headlight and no light to help us find the addresses we had to deliver to as well as trouble reading the package labels. Plus, we were given no night reflectors to deliver in.
So the next day when they called me in for my second day of work I quit. I only took the golf cart position because I thought it would help build my driving skills and confidence so I could grab the horse by the reigns and drive a motor vehicle with the license I got in September. Yet, I stopped wanting to even drive for the sad reason of feeling like the only thing that would motivate me to drive would be having a car of my own. I mean my father was well-intentioned when he gave me his car but being that he still drives it the majority of the time, I don't really feel like it was given to me. It was just dangled in front of me much the same way you may dangle a half-eaten chicken wing in front of a dog if you were mean-spirited.

Heading into 2017, I realized all these errors and decided I was going to clear my mind of all negative and wrong thoughts as the year closed out, and renew my mind to new thoughts for the new year.

So far, 2017 is off to a fabulous start! I've started writing 30 minutes a day. I have weekly freelance writing work, and have now partnered with Amazon via The Smart Cookie Philes. My Christmas was even blessed despite having little income for extravagant gifts, since I placed my confidence in Christ, I ended up getting everything I wanted for Christmas:

A tablet (so I can read The Smart Cookie review queue quicker and more conveniently, plus not have to print a billion pages worth of books so I save trees).

Some new clothes from H&M. (OMG, did you guys know they have shaping denim so me and my big booty can still look cute in a pair of skinny jeans without having to metaphorically cut off my air circulation. Plus, I actually got pajamas to wear for when I do writing of all types).

Beats Headphones (My desk and bedroom are in the middle of my living room. I love my family for being the stone cold pack of weirdos they are but being from up north hereditarily, we are a loud group inside our habitat) They are perfect for writing.

So I ask you in 2017:

Until next time remember,

Before I go, please make sure to check out Kickflip My Heart to your right since I added a new chapter for the new year!

May your 2017 be full of love, joy, and unshakable confidence in a God who's grace abounds and much more abounds for those who diligently seek him.

Writer Wednesday: Happy 15th Birthday Geniveve!

For the past two days, I've been watching recorded tv. What I mean by that is I've been cleaning out my DVR because we were due for a new one. The guy just finished installing it as I type this, and I no longer have to be a daily couch potato.

Today, I write you regarding a very special occasion. My best friend and dog Geniveve turns 15 today! In case you've never met Geniveve, she's a black lab chow mix that I've had since before I turned ten. And we quickly became best friends. Around the time we got her, I was obsessed with the movie Madeline and decided Geniveve would be a perfect fit for my first pet.

Over these past fifteen years, Geni's done things all dogs do: go for walks, visit the beach, enjoy belly rubs and fangirl over food.

Yet, what makes Geniveve so extraordinary is the life she's lead:
She modeled for Ryan Sheckler's charity

Starred in a creative ad for Ryan's charity that won a contest: Just Call Me The Godmother

You can view other videos of Geniveve and fangirl over them all you want on my Youtube channel,
Make sure to watch the videos of her dancing since her hips really do not lie. :)

Shortly after the video was shot, I had spent two years telling her one day she would get the chance to meet Ryan Sheckler, the myth, the man, and the legend.

And she did:

Then she smiled so big afterward because I mean, who wouldn't?!

I've always been happy to stand back while Geniveve took the spotlight because Geni was always there for me, especially when it counted most like when boys would break my heart, friends would leave me out, my family didn't understand me, or August 11, 2012, when I woke up and couldn't breathe.

Over the years, Geniveve has lost perfect sight in her eyes because she developed cataracts from her love of sunbathing, and I've had to help her get around more, and sometimes that requires patience but for me, I don't mind at all. After all she's helped me through and been by my side for, she definitely deserves the utmost respect and as much patience from me as she needs.

Today we celebrate you and your beautiful light, Geniveve. Here's to many more. Keep bringing sexy back girl. I love you so much!

Tampa Pro 2011: The Gnarliest Skate Contest Ever

Florida born and raised but I've got Jersey in my veins...Seriously. If you weren't at Tampa Pro this year, don't worry. Chellyz got yo back. :)

Everyone was here this year. There were 90 skaters attempting to qualify and make the Top 30 to make it to the Semi-Finals where the Top 10 from there go against the Top 2 qualifiers of the weekend. Those two Top dawgs were none other than Torey Pudwill and Zered Bassett.
In case you never heard of the Tampa Pro. It's a professional contest that has been going on since 1995 and it takes place 45-50 minutes away from my house in Port Richey, FL at this place called the Skatepark of Tampa:

It was my best friend Sarah's first Tampa Pro:

She had a killer time! I think she will accompany me to future Pro's. :)

Here's Jereme Rogers and Nyjah Houston♥

Here's Danny Cerezini and Torey Pudwill♥

We also met Chaz Ortiz. The caption for this pic, "Pimpin' aint easy unless you're Chaz Ortiz." Such a cute kid. My sisters officially have a crush. Trust me, it's hard not to like skaters they are the sickest athletes ever, not to mention realer than G's and hot as sin! ;-)

Congrats to Dennis Busenitz for winning this year's Tampa Pro. Also congrats to Nyjah Houston and Torey Pudwill for taking second and third place. :D

The winner's list looks like this:
1. Dennis Busenitz
2.Nyjah Houston
3. Torey Pudwill
4.Shane O'Neil
5.Luan Oliveira
6.P-Rod
7.Chaz Ortiz
8.Zered Bassett
9.Eric Koston
10.Ryan Decenzo
11. Jereme Rogers
12.Chris Troy
All in all it was a fun weekend. You should go next year! Trust me, it's worth the 15 dollars plus hotel stay* and travel expenses.* The sickest shit goes down here every year! :)

For more information and footage from this year's Tampa Pro visit: www.skateparkoftampa.com <----Copy and paste, foo.

Before leaving you with a few final words, Ryan Sheckler would have made the winning list if he didn't get word of a family emergency and had to fly home. Prayers and kind thoughts are being sent his way!

This week is Spring Break for me and my gorgeous sisters. I'm looking forward to spending the week bonding with them. So far, we had fun last night playing with our webcam. Here's a little sneak peak:
My friends all call me the Sexy Librarian because I work at the library. What do you think?

Until next time, follow Lauryn Hill's advice: Don't be a hard rock when you really are a gem- Doo Wop(That Thing). This is the rock that sits on my closet in my dorm that says that exact thing. It reminds me to value myself every day♥ Ladies and gents, be more than this:
Don't give it away. As I always say: "Better the wedding band around my finger than a memory of a one night stand left to linger."♥

The Difference between Love and Respect

Florida born and raised but I've got Jersey in my veins...

You would never guess who I saw this weekend. I personally thought I would never talk to this person again or even be able to look this person in the eye ever again.

Did anyone say Ryan Sheckler? I could have sworn I just heard someone say it through the computer screen.

Well, you're right.

On Saturday, I went to the Sk8park of Tampa for the following event which benefitted Boards for Bros.

It was kewl because I finally got to meet a friend of mine that I made over facebook who I met through the Sheckler Foundation:

Here's the star of the show:

What was the best part of the event was seeing how good Ryan was with the little guys. He had incredible patience with them. He really wanted to help them learn the tricks. It was really incredible and it was a side of Ryan I've never gotten to see up close and personal. Besides that, the kids, the teenage girls, and the moms were mobbing and going fan-crazy. The little kids even tried to follow him into the bathroom. LOl. While he was mobbed by fans who only asked him for pictures and autographs, my mother who is such an AMAZING lady decided to be the polar bear that broke the ice and asked Ryan how he was. His face lit up and he was like, "I'm good. How are you?" Then, he smiled at me. :) FYI, his smile was 100% Grade A Cheese. :P For those that don't know me personally, that means it was a real, genuine smile from the heart. Believe me, I've seen enough fake cheese to know the difference.

Yup, he recognized us. After all these years, it's still nice to see that he knows and appreciates us for supporting him and his career. :)

Today was an even greater day. We heard Ryan was going to be with the rest of the Etnies team at the Westside Skate Shop in Tarpon Springs, FL doing an autograph signing. Tarpon is so close to where we live in Port Richey so we knew we had to go and we figured it was time Geniveve Rosalynn got to meet her hero, Sheckler. :)

Geniveve wore her Ryan Sheckler for Prez shirt and was getting a lot of attention. One of the skaters on the line waiting with us took her picture and as always, she posed and he got a kick out of her. He told us, "You're dog is righteous." Skaters are Legit the shit!

Ryan recognized her when she went under the table to greet him. (Yes, she went right up to Ryan. SN: My girl Geniveve is a freaking smart cookie.)

He even told my mom he remembered the shirt. His DQ: "I know that shirt."

We had him sign the shirt and then he took a picture with all of us girls minus Mom.

It was funny because we were the only people Ryan took a picture with. That's just the perks of befriending a skater before he is MTV and Blockbuster film famous.

Seriously, be nice to people. You never know who's going to make it to the top of the fame ladder a year from now.

Moral of the story: I am not in love with Ryan nor in like with Ryan. What I can say is that I have always cared for him and respected him as a person. Yes, not a skater but first and foremost, A PERSON.

Celebrities are people too.

Not going to say I'm a fan of Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, or Chaz Ortiz, etc. I'm just a fan of skateboarding who grew up befriending and supporting Ryan Sheckler because at that point of my life, it was my God-given purpose. See the rewards I'm reaping today.

Tampa Pro next weekend and I have direct confirmation that Ryan is going to be there.

It's going to be sick.

Hope to see you there!

Before I leave you with a final thought, here's what Geniveve looked like after meeting Ryan:

100% Grade A "I just met Sheckler" cheese! LMAO.

It's a Writer's World After All

My life has become a realistic fiction novel...This blog is for all those writers out there who have been told they aren't good enough or haven't yet been recognized for their talent. Go get'em! :)

So, last Friday I gave my books to Saint Leo's library in order for them to be checked out and read. Yesterday was a rough day for me. My donating my books became the mockery of the library. Let me explain.

Ok, I was told by the catalog librarian that the director of the library found them to be not academic enough for the library. Yet, they have Harry Potter on the shelves and Stephen King. *note sarcasm that follows* Right. That was the reason.

So, now my books are being put in an archive collection for student's of Saint Leo who have published works or books. They may never be looked at or read. I hope you just shed a tear especially all my fellow writers out there. That is the worst thing a writer can ever be told that their work may never be read.

The reason I became a writer is because I'm a soft spoken girl who has a lot to say about a lot of things and have a grace to write words to heal, inspire, and motivate and move people. My words are not meant to be written and collect dust.

I also became a writer because growing up I found more and more young people don't like to read. That's so sad to me because when I was in elementary school and on days when I felt I had no friends, the characters in my books became my friends. Yeah, I know that sounds like I'm some pathetic antisocial loser but that's far from what I am. ;-)

Books are the key to giving children imaginations and inspiring them that they can believe in anything and it can be possible. Dreams do come true. Maybe not overnight but they slowly come to manifestation if you have faith.

Without writers the world would probably be a boring place.

Southpark would not be possible without the writers who write the plot line and dialog for the episodes. Basically any show you watch would not be possible without writers. Yes, even reality shows need writers. Sometimes scenes need to be narrated and those narrations have to be simple and to the point. You can thank a writer for all those narrated voiceovers Ryan Sheckler did throughout his show, Life of Ryan.

The same goes for movies. Every movie has a script that is given to all involved in it. Either a screen WRITER takes a novel and adapts it into a movie or someone comes up with an idea for a movie and writes the entire thing. Now, no movie these days would be complete without the editors as well as the special effect people but most of those people are directed by what the script tells them to do.

Today, more and more singers are expected to be singer/songwriters but some stars still have their songs written for them. Celine Dion for instance is an amazing vocalist but all of her songs were written by other people. If those writers didn't exist, Celine Dion would not exist in the music industry.

So, I would like you right now to go open a book, watch a movie, or watch a tv show or in the rare case that you feel crazy inspired try doing all three one right after the other, and when you're done, stand up and thank and applaud all the writers.

Oh and before I leave you with a final thought let me say that this blog is not me giving up writing. No way. I've come this far with God's help. There's no reason to just throw it all away. Plus, the unreleased third novel I recently finished is a for sure best seller. Just ask the few people I let read it if they liked it. :) So, no worries, loves. Chelsea DeVries is here to stay♥

Until next time, remember it's a writer's world after all. :)
